How to group or un-group icons on Windows 10 Start ?

This is a short post to discuss how to group or un-group programs in Windows Start screen. But before we get there, if you have a new Windows 10 computer, then you might have observed that there are lots of stock programs preinstalled and occupying space on the Windows 10 Start screen. Let's first see how to remove some of those program icons and keep only what we need. And then, we shall see how to group icons and un-group icons.


How to remove program icons from Windows 10 Start screen:

  1. To remove a program icon from Windows Start screen:
  2. Press Windows key on the keyboard to show the Start screen
  3. Right click on the application you want to remove from the Start Menu.
  4. Click on "Unpin from Start"

This will remove the icon from the Windows Start screen making space for other icons you may want to add and display on the Windows Start Screen. There may be some apps which you can directly uninstall. Right-click on the program and click on Uninstall.

How to add program icons to Windows 10 Start screen:

To add a program icon from Windows Start screen:
  1. Press Windows key on the keyboard to show the Start screen
  2. Search for any program you want to display on the start screen by typing the name of the program
  3. Right click on the application you want to add to the Start Menu.
  4. Click on "Pin to Start"

This will add the icon to the Windows Start screen and you can quickly access it when required.

How to group icons on the Windows 10 Start Screen:

If you desire, you can also group similar programs in the Windows Start screen. To group icons on the Windows 10 Start Screen:

  1.  Press Windows key on the keyboard to show the Start screen
  2. Left-Click on the program and drag the icon on top of another 
  3. The two programs are then grouped.
Similarly, you may add more program in the same group or create separate groups based on requirement.

How to ungroup icons on the Windows 10 Start Screen:

To create a group, you simply dragged program on top of another and it is group. However, if you grouped programs by mistake, you will be surprised that you cannot drag the program out of the group that easily. There are no menus other than tile resize.

To ungroup, so the following:

  1. Press Windows key on the keyboard
  2. Type the name of the program you want to take out of the grouped icons.
  3. Once the program is found, right-click on the program and click "Unpin from Start". 
  4. This will remove the program from the group on the Start screen.
  5. Repeat the process - find more applications you want to ungroup. Right-click on the program and click "Unpin from Start". 
  6. This will remove the program from the group on the Start screen.
  7. When the last items is also Unpinned, the empty group will also be removed from Start Screen.

 After all the programs are Unpinned from Start Menu , the group will be destroyed. You can then group icons together by dragging one program on top of another.
