Olympus Fe-46 Digital Camera Battery Empty Error Message

Issue: Olympus Fe-46 Digital Camera Battery Empty Error Message Even When Turned On Using Fully Charged Batteries

Olympus Fe-46 Digital Camera would display "Battery Empty" error when powered on. And this was happening even when using fully charged batteries.

Solutions Tried:
Researched on Google but there were hardly any specific posted related to Fe-46. But in general there were some posts in forums by others to check the contacts of the batteries. So if you are facing a similar issue, check the contacts if they are touching the tips of batteries when the lid is closed. Also clean the contacts to make sure they are clean.

Issue still not resolved.

Check Battery Type being used:
I happened to scan through the Olympus Fe-46 Digital Camera manual for the error "Battery Empty" and found that there is a setting for battery type - Alkaline and NiMH. (Nickel based batteries).  I am not sure why the camera has a settings to know if the battery is Alkaline or NiMH. Whatever battery that can sufficiently power the camera should be fine? I didn't know there is a battery type specific settings in the Olympus camera. That means, we can't use any type of battery anytime. Anyways, time to check the batteries I am using.

The battery being used when the "BATTERY EMPTY" error happens was Eneloop NiMH AA batteries. And because it is always showing "BATTERY EMPTY" when powered on, I can't go and look at the settings menu. So, I needed to check with ALKALINE batteries.

I found a few Sony Alkaline AA batteries which are non-rechargeable batteries. Found another DuraCell AA batteries, which are also Alkaline. Tried the Sony Alkaline AA batteries and viola! The BATTERY EMPTY error is gone.

I got into the camera menu and setup settings, and indeed there is a "battery type" settings where the "Battery Type" was set to "ALKALINE".

Olympus Fe-46 Digital Camera Battery Empty Error Message Alkaline

  • I changed the battery type to NiMH
(since I found most of the rechargeable AA batteries I have are NiMH types - batteries from Eneloop, Nikon, Sony etc. )
  • Switched off the camera.
  • Removed the Duracell Alkaline AA batteries.
  • Inserted the Eneloop AA NiMH batteries.
  • Switched on the camera
  • No more BATTERY EMPTY error message.

So, it was not an issue or a problem with the camera or the batteries really. Just lack of knowledge of a battery type settings in the camera. With the battery type settings changed to NiMH, most rechargeable batteries can be used.
